“Der gesunde Mensch”: Berlin Centre for the Biology of Health

German Science Council recommends joint research building of Charité and Freie Universität Berlin

Joint press release by Charité and FU Berlin

Preventing disease. Understanding mechanisms of health. Keeping people healthy for a long time. This is what medicine of the future should look like. Top researchers from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin soon want to work across disciplines on these urgent social questions. The location for this vision of the future of health research is a listed building in southwest Berlin. Renovated and refurbished, the former Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology is to house the Berlin Centre for the Biology of Health (BC-BH). The Science Council of the German federal and state governments today recommended the application for the joint research building for funding of around 54 million euros*.

Berlin Centre for the Biology of Health (BC-BH).
A total area of 3,169 square meters is planned for the research building. The total cost of the BC-BH, including initial furnishings and major equipment, is 54.4 million euros. The research building is financed in equal parts by the state of Berlin and the federal government. The operating costs will be shared by FU Berlin and Charité in proportion to the actual shares of use, around 70 percent Charité and around 30 percent FU Berlin. The planning and construction of the research building will be coordinated and carried out by Charité’s construction department as the building owner. The project is to be planned and realized between 2024 and 2028.
